What are the benefits of doggy daycare?
Letting your dog have free-time to interact with other dogs and humans of all ages is one of the most important things you can do to help her develop into and remain a calm, confident dog unlikely to bark, bite or become fearful or aggressive. Who is The Divine Canine, LLC ? The Divine Canine, LLC is owned by Sarah Nissen, a compassionate, animal-loving vegetarian and operated by Sarah and her husband Tim Ehlers, their young son Zane and the wonderful Canine Care Attendants, Valerie, Beth and Christie. Sarah grew up in the San Francisco Bay Area surrounded by pets of all kinds - dogs, birds, hamsters, rats, turtles, cats, pet ants, pet caterpillars, and more. She studied to be a computer scientist at the University of California at Santa Cruz. After a few failed attempts at calculus, she left school and turned to the profession of Web Design. She found herself a little unhappy and unfulfilled sitting in a cubicle and staring at a screen all day, so she left. She wanted desperately to have a profession where she could wake up in the morning eager to go to work. She replied to a "Dog Walkers Needed" ad she saw in the local newspaper. She found that she really enjoyed working with all of the dogs she was fortunate to be entrusted with, and she decided to make pet care her full-time profession. Sarah and Tim met 6 years ago and have been best friends and partners ever since. They have a four year old terrier mix, Milo, and a two year old Australian Shepherd/Border Collie cross, Adelaide (Addie). After a successful year running a dog-walking business in California, Sarah and Tim moved to Colorado in March 2003 to begin a lifetime of reliable animal service here. They started The Divine Canine LLC in August 2004 when Sarah bought the existing Doggy Depot Canine Daycare business located in Lafayette, Colorado. On October 1, 2006, they moved to the current facility off of Hwy 42 in Louisville. Tell me about your Divine Dogs. Our Divine Dogs, a.k.a. Milo and Adelaide are Sarah and Tim's dog-son and dog-daughter. They adopted Milo in June 2002 from Pets in Need, a great no-kill shelter in Redwood City, California. They got Addie from The Dumb Friends League in Castle Rock, CO. Milo and Addie eat an alternative raw food diet known as the "BARF" diet. They are extremely healthy and full of vigor. Contact us if you would like more information on alternative diets or advice on puppy-rearing. Tell me about the BARF diet you feed your dogs. BARF stands for "Biologically Appropriate Raw Food" or "Bones and Raw Food". We chose to start feeding Milo and Addie this diet consisting of raw chicken necks and backs, muscle meat, pulped raw vegetables, and occasional supplements after reading Kymythy Schultze's Book, Natural Nutrition for Dogs and Cats: The Ultimate Diet. The idea behind the diet is that you are recreating the small prey animal your pet would eat daily if it were a wild animal like a coyote, wolf, or wildcat. We feed Milo and Addie mostly whole chicken pieces mixed with the vegetable pulp, some flax seed oil, and a little alfalfa and kelp powder for extra vitamins and minerals. The vegetables must be ground up into a fine pulp because dogs and cats cannot absorb the nutrients and utilize the enzymes otherwise. And it's actually healthy to feed RAW chicken bones whole as long as the animal crunches them into small chunks before swallowing. Our dogs are so healthy and their poops are so small and odorless, we would never feed any other way! There are also many pre-made raw diets that can be purchased frozen and ready to feed, once thawed. They are much easier and more convenient! At the Divine Canine, we carry Nature's Variety Prairie raw diets. Is The Divine Canine licensed and insured? YES! We are fully insured by Zurich Liability Insurance company and we are registered with the City of Louisville and the State of Colorado, and we are licensed and inspected by the Colorado Department of Agriculture. What organizations is The Divine Canine associated with? What products does The Divine Canine use? We strongly believe in the powers of positive training and reinforcement,
and holistic animal rearing. For dogs who are pullers or hard to control
while on walks, we recommend headcollars such as Gentle Leader or Halti
rather than collars that inflict pain or choke. We have also like no-pull
harnesses such as te Easy Walk harness. Even the largest dog can be
easily controlled by the smallest person with a headcollar or no-pull
harness without pain or suffering on anyone's part. We like to walk
with 6-foot or shorter leather or braided cotton leashes for the easiest
control. We feed a raw meat diet to our own dogs for holistic health
management, but we also recommend and sell several high quality foods
such as Canidae, Natural Balance, Nature's Variety, Wellness, and Artemis.
